Second Meeting for Pre-Production Documentation
With the dateline for documentation soon, we need to decide on the script soon.
Things that we are considering during our consideration of scripts are
1) Time required for filming
2) Time required for post-production editing
3) Time required for careful scripting
4) Number of people involved
5) Cost of props
In the end we decided to take the idea of
Dublin's People
and
Saturday Night Live Title Sequence
Both take up the idea of living portrait. However, there is a difference in tempo of the vid.
We decide to adopt the slow tempo one for CNM. This is because CNM is not very happening all the time. But for each things that happen, CNM is able to make things really fun and interesting! We also decide to use portraits of lecturers and tutors instead of students because these are the faces that potential students will get to see when they enter NUS. With CNM becoming an official department, it is essential to introduce CNM staff to recognize their contribution.
We decide to adopt the fast tempo for NUS. On first thought, we were thinking that the content were students and their daily activities. However, that will be too random and will make the video a very confusing one. Thus, we decided to focus on TeamNUS, societies and interest groups. We know that there are over hundreds of these in the NUS, but we will just try to cover as much as we can without crossing 3min maximum limit and losing our audiences attention.

Assignment 2 In Progress 4
A2 Progress 4
Now that I have got my commentary, my pictures, the next I want to find is sound/music.
I tried goggling for free music but the results are rubbish.
I then email Julian asking him a few questions.
Questions
1) If I not intending for the NUS people to select my vid for NUS use, it is actually okay for me to use any music right? Since it is purely for educational purpose, there is no infringement of copyright issue like last year Kinetic Typography which students uses commercialized songs.
2) If NUS is have pick up my vid, I would like to ask if what they are doing is a commercialized purpose since they are not selling it for money?
Answers
Not recommended.
Two additional graders from office of admission will come and look through all videos. We would not consider any clips which have any copyrighted materials.
Wells, I am stuck, I don't know where to get my music. I think I should ask other people where to get free music. For now, I play around with the typography and colors for the background and titles, I also tried to do some title animations and get use to it.

Assignment 2 In Progress 3
A2 Progress 3
With the commentary done, I moved on the next step that I think I should is finding pictures that fits my commentary. After first I create a new folder and start dumping photos that I think is suitable and soon I realized that the photo is getting too crowded.
I decide to change tactic. I begin listening to my commentary and pauses at each key points and at these points, I went around to hunt in my photo memories archives. I find this a better way of getting things done as this will not have redundant photos lying around to create confusing.
I then place the audio and pictures in to adobe premiere. After placing the photos in, I realized that there are scenes whereby it is really long on a same picture and there are some parts of the audio where I have nothing to display.
I decide to find more pictures to decrease the display of each photos as I feel that for Ken Burns, if the picture is there on the screen for too long, it will defeat the whole idea of Ken Burns itself. For scenes that are empty, I tried to minimize them and I put in titles.

Final Project Pre-Production Documentation Meeting 1
First meeting for Pre-Production Documentation
We brainstormed for our final project ideas. It is not difficult if we wanted to do some thing common and I think this situation is similar in any brainstorming session.
Initial, we had an idea of interviewing students and string together to form NUS/CNM at the end of the flim, but that idea was already being shown to us by Julian in class. If we were to do that idea, most likely we will shot down.
We shared some clips and ideas that we found and here are a few that I personally find interesting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjzwdKi4B7Y
http://www.noob.us/humor/conan-jogs-across-the-country/
Personally, I suggested suggested MTV similar to mrbrown style. Non-formal, but not kiddish.

Assignment 2 In Progress 2
A2 Progress 2
After a consultation with Julian, I decide to record my commentary again as he commented that it was a little monotonous at the beginning. As it is almost impossible to get a similar voice no two separate recording with days apart, I decide to recording everything again. Anyway, I realized that there are some words that I should change in order to express myself better. This time, I record my voices directly into adobe soundbooth, in addition, I did everything together without stopping my recording as I feel that I can remove the NGs parts and edit the pauses later on. The commentary come out fine after editing though I hope it would have been louder with the need to digitally increase the amplitude of the audio.

Assignment 1 Website 2
There! Finally finished redoing of my website.
To tweak around with the kiddish feeling, if I were to color pastel colour, I decide to use textures instead. Thought it might be time consuming, but at least its all done one.
I did all the texture wrapping using adobe illustrator. It is an useful function. I draw my shapes, then I find my texture, crop and angle properly and I use the Envelop Distort function under the Object tab to give it a distorted but a little 3D feel.

Assignment 1 Sketch 2
I had a consultation with Julian for my assignment 1.
He feel that my website lacks a punch. All the minimal requirements are fulfilled but he feels that there should be more to it. He has higher expectations for me than what I have already produced.
With dateline due at the end of the week. Do I have the time to redo?
I decided that I better redo. The reason is that I do not want to be just okay. I want to be good. This might only one module that I can get A.
After some thoughts. I managed to sketch out some thoughts with more graphical design to it.
It might look a little childish, but I guess I have to tweak around little.

Difference before and after scripting
I think the main difference is that scripting helps to make things fall together. Before this assignment I was struggling with how pictures and my commentaries and sync with each other. After this scripting, I am more aware of how my commentary and pictures will come together.
Film 1: Gran Torino
- Which are the characters /roles in this script? Clink Eastwood as Walt Kowalski, Christopher Carley as Father Janovich, Bee Vang as Thao, Ahney Her as Sue
- Point out the voice over.
- Point out the camera movement
- Point out the transition
- How does it present place and time?
Film 2: Juno
- Which are the characters /roles in this script? Ellen Page as Juno MacGuff, Michael Cera as Paulie Bleeker, Jennifer Garner as Vanessa Loring, Jason Bateman as Mark Loring, Allison Janney as Bren MacGuff, J.K. Simmons as Mac MacGuff

Assignment 2 In Progress 1
A2 Progress 1
Left off the Assignment 2 at its storyline the last time I blogged.
After that storyline, I tried to record it on my laptop. Julian said that he could help to give us access to recording room for recording of our voice, but there was no updates. So I decided to try recording myself and the best timing is none other than midnight, where the environment is quiet. I tried to recording with the my iphone memo function and it did come out fine. However, I forgot to mute my laptop and two MSN alert ping sounds were recorded in it. After playing around with adobe sound booth, I found a way to remove the pings.

Assignment 1 Website
I have finally finished my assignment for website part. There are some screen prints. There are quite visible different from what I have drew for my sketch.
The main difference the the removal for bottom navigation bar. The reason is because if I would to incorporate it, my display of my main art work will be very small.
Give some comments. Thanks! =)

Assignment 2 Storyline
Assignment 2 is to develop a plot on the theme (e.g., about our university or our CNM programme; why you choose NUS/CNM, what you enjoy/like in the uni/campus, the uniqueness of NUS/CNM). How to promote and let others see the benefits/advantages of studying in NUS and CNM from your point of view as a student.
Draft One
This approach starts from what kind of photos to put in before thinking how it should be done and what commentary should there be.
This approach starts from a commentary before thinking on which photos to put in.
The reason why I am in NUS because its nearer than NTU. I chose SOC is elimination of choices. I chose CM is because it is the one with the least technical requirements.
However, thinking back how I spent my past years in NUS, I didn't regret being where I am because I did enjoy myself because of the friends and lecturers I know here. Till now, I maintain contact with people I know during orientation camps, faculty camps and CCA camps. This socializing and fun experience is a life-long skill and memories will not be lost even after I graduate. My CCA, ODAC, allows me to explore the nature while learning on-the-go how to plan for and organize events and oversea trips with participants from various backgrounds.
On the academic side, the system of modules bidding is unique and degree requirements gives much flexibilities that allow me to take modules that I am interested in and therefore allow me to gain knowledge in areas of my interest. New media modules make me realized today's information message is heavily mediated and have huge impacts in our life. Design modules makes me appreciate the forms today's products are and develops my habit of being critical and squeezes my creative juice for future designs and improvement for our daily life.
There are varieties of overseas opportunities for students to embark a globally-oriented educational experience. Student exchanges, summer programmes and is a more structured manner, while international internships like NOCs, i-Itern, international research attachments and SHAPE is in a more innovative and exploratory manner. NUS also has various schemes for financial aid that can help to lessen the burden who students usually is in deep debt even before they start their career.
Hm... Okies.. after typing this whole lot, I think this will be my commentaries for my Ken Burns video. Now, it is to find photos that can used.
Draft One
This approach starts from what kind of photos to put in before thinking how it should be done and what commentary should there be.
- Uni starts with a rites of passage call orientation camps
- Many camps
- union camp
- faculty camp
- cca camp
- But all will end up at the beach
- so there are a few things that you need to learn
- learn to swim
- learn to cycle
- learn to socialize
- whhat uni life without a cca
- I joined ODAC
- We
- track the forest
- water raft
- watch sunrise
- climbk
- show result slip of Ds and Cs
- While you are having fun people are actually studying hard
- NUS provides a good studying environment
- With lots of benches
- lots of sockets
- and availability of coffee
- because studying can be a chore and that make you sleepy
- sleepy easily
- sleepy in lecture
- sleepy on benches
- sleeping on readings
- Spiderman to the rescue during reading week in library
- while some modules are a bore
- there are some interesting ones like design and robotic modules
- at the end of the day, NUS is about friends you know, things you learn and what you experience
